The TrustATrader alternative: one annual fee, paid upfront. A 12-month lock-in either way.
TrustATrader charges no fee per lead, genuinely simpler than most directories. But the Subscription Fee is due annually, in advance, non-refundable, and once your listing goes live you cannot cancel before the 12-month term ends. Here is a fair comparison, and the alternative.
The best TrustATrader alternative is owning your own lead channels: a Google Business Profile, a website on your domain, and ad accounts in your name. TrustATrader charges one Subscription Fee with no per-lead add-on, but it is paid annually in advance, is non-refundable, and locks you in for 12 months with no early exit. Owning your channels replaces that upfront commitment with one fixed cost you control month to month.

What the annual-fee model actually commits you to
TrustATrader’s model is the mirror image of the pay-per-lead directories: one fee, no per-lead add-on, but paid upfront and locked in. Here are the mechanics, taken directly from TrustATrader’s own published Trader Terms and Conditions.
The Subscription Fee is "calculated and payable annually on the anniversary of the start" of your subscription, "in advance" (Clause 5a): due before you have seen a single enquiry that year.
Minimum term from go-live, with no early exit: "Once live on the Website you cannot cancel the membership agreement prior to the expiry of the 12 month membership period" (Clause 5d), and the fee is non-refundable regardless (Clause 5c).
One fixed Google Ads management fee, paid monthly not annually, with ad spend passed to Google at cost and every enquiry exclusively yours. £500/month minimum recommended spend.
Annual, upfront and locked-in vs owning your leads
| Factor | Owning your leads | TrustATrader |
|---|---|---|
| What your money buys | Visibility to everyone searching | A directory listing and enquiries, no separate per-lead charge (Clause 6b) |
| Number of cost layers | One, a single fixed monthly fee | One, but paid annually, not monthly (Clause 5a) |
| Payment timing | Set by you, month to month | Due annually, in advance, before you have had a single lead that year (Clause 5a) |
| Contract commitment | None, stop anytime | 12-month minimum from go-live, no early cancellation (Clauses 1d, 5d) |
| Refunds | N/A, stop paying and the cost stops | Subscription Fee is non-refundable "notwithstanding termination" (Clause 5c) |
| Renewal | N/A, ongoing, month to month | No auto-renewal, TrustATrader contacts you at year end to discuss it (Clause 5b) |
| Competing listings in your category/area | N/A, the enquiry is yours alone | Capped at up to 10 entries at any one time (Clause 6a) |
| What you own | Website, GBP, ad account, customer list | A profile on their platform |
Put the Subscription Fee in as your annual cost and divide by the jobs it actually produced over the year. Because the fee is locked in regardless of a slow patch, this is the number that tells you whether the membership is paying for itself.
Not a per-lead fee: a paid-upfront, locked-in one
Every other directory in this comparison set charges something per lead or per shortlist. TrustATrader doesn’t: its own terms describe a single Subscription Fee covering your listing and enquiries, with no separate charge each time a customer gets in touch (Clause 6b). That is a genuinely simpler mechanic, and worth crediting.
The trade-off sits on the other side of the ledger. The fee is “calculated and payable annually… in advance” (Clause 5a): the whole year, before you know how many leads it will actually produce. Once your account goes live, the 12-month clock starts (Clause 1d) and there is no exit before it ends: “Once live on the Website you cannot cancel the membership agreement prior to the expiry of the 12 month membership period” (Clause 5d). If the leads slow down in month four, the fee for months five through twelve is still owed, and it is non-refundable even if you do manage to leave (Clause 5c).
TrustATrader does get one thing right that most competitors don’t: no automatic renewal. It states it will contact you “at the end of each year… to discuss your renewal” (Clause 5b), giving you a genuine decision point rather than a silent re-charge. Use that moment to run the maths in the cost calculator, then compare it against a channel priced month to month where the enquiry is exclusively yours from the first click: Google Search Ads for trades from £495/month, spend at cost, or local SEO so the map-pack traffic compounds for free.
Where TrustATrader genuinely helps.
This is not a hit piece. TrustATrader’s model has real, sourced advantages over the pay-per-lead directories, and for some trades the trade-off is worth it.
- No per-lead surprises. One Subscription Fee covers your listing and enquiries with no additional charge each time a customer messages you (Clause 6b), genuinely simpler than a per-lead or Shortlist Fee model.
- A capped number of competing listings. TrustATrader’s own terms limit each trade category to “no more than ten entries… in your geographical area at any one time” (Clause 6a), a real ceiling on how many tradespeople can be listed against you, even if it doesn’t cap quotes on a single job directly.
- No silent auto-renewal. TrustATrader contacts members “at the end of each year” to discuss renewal rather than re-charging automatically (Clause 5b), a fairer mechanic than most annual subscriptions default to.
The problem is the commitment shape, not the fee structure itself: the Subscription Fee is due a full year in advance, it is non-refundable if things change, and once live you are locked in for 12 months regardless of how the leads actually land. Trades in construction and the building trades feel this hardest, since a quiet quarter still leaves the rest of the year’s fee already spent.
How to move off an annual, locked-in fee in 90 days
You don’t need a hard switch, and mid-term you can’t force one anyway. Build the owned channels alongside TrustATrader, then use the renewal conversation TrustATrader itself initiates (Clause 5b) as your real decision point.
- Check whether you are mid-term before deciding anything
Your 12-month clock starts "from the date at which your account is put live on the website" (Clause 1d), not from sign-up. Leaving early does not stop you owing the fee: it is non-refundable "notwithstanding termination" (Clause 5c). Know your renewal date before you plan around it.
- Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile
Your map-pack listing is the highest-leverage replacement for a directory listing. Complete every field, add real photos of finished jobs, and start asking happy customers for reviews so your reputation builds somewhere you own.
- Put a fast, simple site on your own domain
One or two pages that load quickly and convert, on a domain in your name. It gives Google and any ads somewhere to send people, and unlike a directory subscription it cannot be re-priced or discontinued by someone else.
- Open a search ad account in your own name
Start with a modest local budget on high-intent searches. You set the spend, pay the platform directly at cost, and every enquiry that arrives is exclusively yours, with no annual fee due upfront before you have seen a single lead.
- Use the renewal conversation as your decision point, not a mid-term exit
Because TrustATrader does not auto-renew and instead contacts you "at the end of each year" to discuss renewal (Clause 5b), you get a real, built-in moment to compare the fee you are about to pay again against your cost per won job from owned channels.

Common questions about TrustATrader alternatives
What is the best alternative to TrustATrader?+
The strongest alternative is owning the channels that produce your leads: an optimised Google Business Profile, a website on your own domain, and ad accounts in your name. TrustATrader has no per-lead fee, which is genuinely simpler than most directories, but its Subscription Fee is paid annually in advance and locks you in for 12 months with no early exit. Owning your channels replaces that upfront, locked-in cost with a fixed cost you control month to month.
How does TrustATrader charge tradespeople?+
Per TrustATrader’s own published Trader Terms and Conditions, the Subscription Fee "is calculated and payable annually on the anniversary of the start" of your subscription, "in advance" (Clause 5a). There is no separate per-lead or per-quote charge. The Subscription Fee covers your directory listing and enquiries sent through TrustATrader’s messaging system (Clause 6b).
Does TrustATrader charge a fee per lead?+
No. Unlike Checkatrade, Bark, MyBuilder or Rated People, TrustATrader’s own terms describe a single annual Subscription Fee with no additional charge per enquiry or per job you quote on. That is a genuinely different mechanic from the other four directories in this comparison set.
What happens if I want to leave TrustATrader before the year is up?+
You still owe the fee. TrustATrader’s own terms state plainly: "Once live on the Website you cannot cancel the membership agreement prior to the expiry of the 12 month membership period" (Clause 5d). That 12-month term begins "from the date at which your account is put live on the website" (Clause 1d), not from when you signed up.
Is the TrustATrader Subscription Fee refundable?+
No. TrustATrader’s terms state the Subscription Fee is "non-refundable notwithstanding termination" (Clause 5c), so even if you stop using the listing or cancel, the annual fee you already paid is not returned.
Does TrustATrader renew automatically?+
No. TrustATrader’s terms state: "We do not operate an automatic renewal system, we will contact you at the end of each year of your annual membership to discuss your renewal" (Clause 5b). That is a fairer mechanic than an automatic annual re-charge, though it does not change that you cannot exit mid-term.
How many tradespeople compete for the same trade category on TrustATrader?+
TrustATrader’s own terms cap listings, not quotes directly: "there will be no more than ten entries in the trade category selected by you... in your geographical area at any one time" (Clause 6a). That limits how many competing tradespeople can be listed in your category and area at all, a different, looser form of exclusivity than a per-job quote cap.
Is TrustATrader worth it for tradespeople?+
It can be, particularly if you value a simple, predictable one-fee model with no per-lead surprises and a capped number of competing listings in your category and area. The trade-off is cash flow and commitment: the Subscription Fee is due annually in advance, it is non-refundable, and you cannot cancel before the 12-month term ends even if the leads dry up.
Can I use TrustATrader and build my own leads at the same time?+
Yes. Keep the subscription running while your own Google Business Profile, website and ads build up, then decide at your renewal conversation with TrustATrader (Clause 5b) whether paying the annual fee again still beats your cost per won job from owned channels.
What happens to my TrustATrader reviews if I leave?+
They stay on TrustATrader. Reviews and ratings earned on any directory belong to that directory: the central risk of building your reputation somewhere you do not own. Reviews collected on your own Google Business Profile are tied to an asset that stays yours, keep working across Google Search and Maps, and follow you regardless of which marketing channels you run.

The mechanics described here (the annual, in-advance Subscription Fee, the 12-month membership period and its start date, the no-early-cancellation rule, the non-refundable fee, the no-auto-renewal policy, and the ten-entries-per-category-and-area cap) are taken directly from TrustATrader’s own published Trader Terms and Conditions (Clauses 1d, 5a–5d and 6a–6b), checked on 2 September 2026. TrustATrader does not publish a fixed Subscription Fee on its terms or “How it works” pages; independent 2026 reporting cites figures in the region of £699+VAT a year, varying by trade and postcode coverage, but we have deliberately not treated that as an official TrustATrader number.
